Tai Kwun Neon Connection

Location: Tai Kwun, Hong Kong
Date: 11 Apr 2024 - 10 Apr 2025

Background Tai Kwun Neon Connection is an open call for proposals of public sculptures using the medium of neon lights. Inspired by the Hong Kong neon exhibition Vital Signs, Tai Kwun aims to use neon to activate the Tai Kwun Lane - the main pedestrian artery connecting two major public spaces, Parade Ground and Prison Yard, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Artwork Memoir in Neon designed by YARD Architecture Studio was selected as the winning concept out of the 24 entries received after rounds of jury discussions. Memoir in Neon leads visitors through a three-zone imagined streetscape of 19th and 20th Century Hong Kong by celebrating some distinctly Hong Kong visual motifs:

[Zone 1] RED Social Node - Locally made red plastic chairs and lampshades
[Zone 2] GREEN Gates - Concertina shopfront grilles
[Zone 3] RED WHITE BLUE Arch Weave - Red-white-blue canvas bags and Victorian Italianate archways

RoleAs the Porject Lead, Kwong facilitated the launch and result annoucement of the open call, oversaw the production with artists and technical partners, documentation (photos and videos), and operations of the public art installation.
